Welcome to the eighth post in our twelve-part series reviewing each team’s signing class to date. These articles aim to provide a snapshot look at each team and lay out possible next steps once the transfer
portal opens. Teams will be examined in alphabetical order. Today will look at the Aztecs.
The Road So Far:
Number who signed in December: 22
Number who will enroll early: 8
Number of states represented:
5247 Composite Rankings (subject to change): 75th
MWCConnection December Ranking: 4th
Positional Strengths: EDGE, Defensive Back
Notable signees: Alijah Lash, Tainoa Lave
Overall thoughts:
Sean Lewis has had no issue recruiting during his time at San Diego State, turning in strong classes each year. This year’s is overall ranked higher, despite lacking some of the conference’s best talent and even though it’s currently ranked lower in the conference compared to last year. There was a clear emphasis on the defensive side of the ball, loading up on defensive backs and wide receivers. That doesn’t mean they didn’t attend to the offense, bringing in several wide receivers and offensive linemen in an attempt to shore up their offensive shortcomings from this past season.
To the surprise of no one, the bulk of this Aztec’s class hails from the state of California. However, they went outside their home state a bit, with an intential focus on recruiting Washington, plus Texas, Nevada, and Hawaii. Expanding their recruiting efforts to different states demonstrates their ability to look in numerous areas to find the best talent possible. It seems like the staff was able to accompish that during this cycle.
It is not necessarily a top-heavy class. Instead, San Diego State’s 2026 class can best be described as one of high-quality that should be lauded for its depth more than star power. There is little drop-off moving to the bottom of the class and even the lower-ranked signees have some potential upside.
The Road Ahead:
Expected Level of Transfer Additions: Medium
Top Position Targets Remaining: Wide Receiver, Defensive Back
Overall thoughts:
Like most new head coaches, Sean Lewis had to navigate the comings and goings of the transfer portal when he took over the Aztec program. He’s overseen a large roster turnover the past two offseasons, but looks to have more stability this time around. After recruiting the majority of players through the portal, signing 22 high school players may be a sign that there is less of a need for transfers this time around.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t a need for players who can see the field right away. The offense struggled once again in 2025, and could use more impact players at the skill position, especially at wide receiver. Other spots, like running back and offensive line, would benefit from another player or two as well. The defense will be losing a few players in the secondary and finding quality portal additions will keeep that side of the ball looking strong once again next season.
After having to put in tons of effort to complete the roster the last two years, San Diego State can now hone in specific positions to improve lacking areas. If they can manage to do that, they should be back in the conference title hunt for the 2026 season.
