The other day, we asked you a question about the team’s payroll. It’s a target that is constantly shifting for unknown reasons, but Dave Dombrowski has gone on record as saying he gave something to John Middleton and it was approved. What that number was, we won’t know, but here is what you think that number should be.
Over $290 million? What is this, New York?
It’s pretty apparent that if real, honest upgrades are going to occur, there will have to be significant outlay of money. Not only is the team
going to be interested in retaining a few of the free agents they’re about to have, they’re also going to want to make upgrades at a position or two. For example, the biggest place they could upgrade would be at third base where Alec Bohm is currently atop the depth chart. If we use the arbitration estimate that is out in public, he’s about to get roughly $10 million. The best free agent option that they have to choose from is Alex Bregman and he’s likely cost at least $30 million per season on a new deal. That’s an increase of around $20 million at third base alone.
The slope gets slippery quickly. If the team is not interested in adding players via free agency, upgrades through trades will also require taking on money. You, dear reader, clearly have no issue spending that money….and I agree!
Spend, Johnny, spend!
