Through the autumn months, the rumour mongers regularly had Bournemouth 25-year-old Antoine Semenyo as a top Liverpool transfer target, with the Reds said to be eying the London-born Ghanaian international as a potential long-term replacement for winger Mohamed Salah.
Over the past few weeks, though, it has instead been Manchester City at the forefront of the Semenyo-related transfer chatter. Now, reliable reports have the Citizens set to push to close a deal for the rapid forward following Bournemouth’s
match against Tottenham on Wednesday.
At least that’s how The Athletic’s David Ornstein sees it, suggesting that it will be Semenyo’s final game for his current club before he switches over to City. For Liverpool, the question becomes whether the player was ever actually the top target or if past chatter was largely speculative.
What does seem clear is that after selling Darwin Nuñez and Luis Diaz last summer and following the Diogo Jota tragedy, the Reds have ended up rather thin at forward this season—though despite that, opportunities have been surprisingly limited for Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa.
