On an unassuming 8-yard curl route, Jaxon Smith-Njiba ventured where no Seattle Seahawks wide receiver has gone before, breaking the team’s single-season receiving yards record in only 11 games.
That catch was one of Smith-Njiba’s eight total, which helped lift the Seahawks over the Tennessee Titans 30—24, but it was far from his flashiest. En route to breaking the record, the third-year wideout caught two touchdowns, one from 63 yards out, where he got to waltz into the end zone, and another on a quick
slant to all but put the game on ice.
Smith-Njiba’s 1,313 yards this season broke the record set by DK Metcalf in 2020. In that season, Metcalf rode the “Let Russ Cook” train until the wheels fell off to the tune of 1,303 yards across 16 games.
In addition to breaking the record, Smith-Njigba’s 167 receiving yards in this game gave him the fifth-most receiving yards through 11 games in the Super Bowl era, surpassing future Hall of Famer and perennial All-Pro Julio Jones. This game keeps him on pace to challenge the all-time NFL record held by Calvin Johnson with 1,964 yards.
Smith-Njigba is averaging 20 more receiving yards per game than any other wideout in the NFL. His historic season has him on track to break the team’s single-season receptions record as well, which he tied last season with 100.
With six games remaining, the possibilities remain endless for the ridiculous stat lines that JSN and Sam Darnold can combine for. Especially considering the Seahawks have the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers, which have both given up huge receiving yardage to star players down the stretch.
