Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid. The lowest of lows…
This is the immediate reaction. Next: Player ratings, interviews and a podcast. After the events of the last week, the last thing that any Real Madrid fan wanted was to play Barcelona – in a game where a result for them would secure the La Liga title. A plethora of players were unavailable, leading the Fran García starting at left-back, Raúl Asencio at centre-back, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga in the middle with Brahim Díaz and co. ahead
of them. The bench was replenished with five Castilla players, leading them to lose a crucial game in their own play-off race yesterday. Vinícius Júnior captained the team in the wake of Fede Valverde’s well documented absence.
Barcelona took the lead through a Marcus Rashford free-kick, before doubling it after a nice combo for Ferran Torres to put the game out of sight after twenty minutes. The home side continued to be the better side for the entire first half, with clumsy challenges from Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga the best Los Blancos could come up with. 2-0 at half-time, with fans wishing this was the full-time whistle.
The second half appeared to be a tamer affair, to the delight of Madridistas. Thibaut Courtois made a couple of good saves, and Real Madrid’s best contributions to the game came through Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Brit played an insane pass into the area, but Jude Bellingham couldn’t control it. Jude then scored, only for the flag to come up for offside. Without breaking a sweat, Barcelona became league champions – and a toothless Real Madrid trudged back into the locker rooms as if it never happened. 2-0 full-time. Where do Real Madrid go from here?
