Good morning, baseball fans!
Another week of San Francisco Firebells baseball is in the books, so let’s see how they did and what’s on deck for this week.
Last week, we discussed the Firebells’ dominant stretch of wins that had them leading the WPBL. They still lead the league, as of the time this is being written, but it was a less than dominant week.
First up, the Firebells lost 11-8 to the New York Heights on August 19th. Liz Gilder got the start for the Firebells, allowing six runs (four earned)
on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks in three and two thirds innings. Ela Day-Bédard and Peyton Coria pitched in relief, allowing a combined five runs on five hits with a walk a piece, with Coria getting two strikeouts. Kelsie Whitmore (CF) led the offense, scoring two runs and knocking in two on two hits (including a home run!). But it wasn’t enough to overcome the Heights.
After beating the snot out of the Los Angeles Queens in their prior match-ups, the Queens took their revenge on Friday, defeating the Firebells 8-6. Whitmore got the start, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Peyton Coria pitched in relief, allowing three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and three walks in her inning. Alexia Jorge (C) led the offense, scoring two runs on three hits (including a home run!). Joely Leguizamon (SS) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI as well, but the Firebells fell just short of a comeback.
Which can only mean one thing, the Firebells were looking for a win big time in Saturday’s match-up against the Boston Hunters. And they certainly got it, winning 12-5! Niki Eckert got the start for the Firebells, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks in three and two thirds innings. Day-Bédard got roughed up for three runs (only one earned) on three hits with a strikeout and three walks in her inning of work, and Gilder closed things out for two and a third innings of one-hit ball, striking out two.
Whitmore led the offense once again, with two runs and two RBI on three hits (including another home run!). Alexia Jorge (DH/C) knocked in two runs on two hits, and Samantha Gutierrez (C/3B) knocked in two runs on two hits as well, including a home run of her own. All around a stellar performance for the Firebells to round out their week.
