Bayern Munich and Manuel Neuer are almost synonymous at this point.
However, many years ago, the goalkeeper was still playing for his boyhood club, Schalke. It seems like forever ago now, but in a recent interview, it seems like that affection has not faded with time.
“I’m the biggest [Schalke] fan, when they play against Dortmund,” Neuer told DAZN via @iMiaSanMia with a laugh. “But, of course, I want to win and keep a clean sheet. For me, the club simply belongs in the Bundesliga. I grew up there;
my family is from there. I’m Gelsenkirchen, I’m Schalke, but I also have that Bavarian sense of comfort and laid-backness.”
It appears the love for his former club is still strong and despite that love, he is eager to perform once again for Bayern Munich. While his time in the Bundesliga might be coming to an end with retirement looming in the near future, it sure is great to see Neuer still playing and to see Schalke back up where they belong.
As great as it would be to see Neuer retire in Munich, it would certainly be an interesting option for him to return to Gelsenkirchen one last time.
