Bayer Leverkusen gave everything they had to get a sensational Bundesliga win over German record champions Bayern Munich but could only manage a draw despite what became a two-man advantage by the end of the game.
In the end it was exhilaration, and disappointment.
“I thought we were the better team. We had a lot of chances to score the second goal, and I think if we do that, the game is over,” Leverkusen winger Montrell Culbreath said after the match in his interview with ESPN sideline reporter Archie
Rhind-Tutt.
The 18-year-old talent got the better of Bayern superstar Luis Díaz to create the transition that would quickly become Leverkusen’s crucial opening goal in just the sixth minute of play.
“I wanted to show from minute one that I’m there. Of course, I have a lot of respect [for Díaz]…but I just went into the game fearless and I wanted to show that from the beginning,” Culbreath said of his moment.
But he also had one of his side’s better chances to finish the game off, a 1-v-1 against Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich that he dragged just wide.
“I thought it was going to go in…maybe next time. It was close,” Culbreath added.
The youngster was also asked about the possibility of a USMNT future, although he is currently representing Germany internationally at the youth level.
“I can’t say much about [the World Cup]. What comes, comes. In the moment, I play for Germany in the Under-19s, but you never know,” Culbreath responded.
Leverkusen is coming off a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg last week. The glass half full approach shows a team in flowing form in a tough gauntlet of games — rather than one that keeps finding ways not to finish the job. But Culbreath and Die Werkself have a chance to advance next week.
As Culbreath concluded: “We brought that energy today just to show Arsenal: we’re ready for Tuesday!”
