I guess it’s not “set” after all.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is scheduled to rematch Manny Pacquiao on Sept. 19, for some reason, but what was originally expected to be a professional bout has now been downgraded to an exhibition match. In addition, handlers are still trying to find a suitable location.
Perhaps the “Money” team had sticker shock after getting this multimillion-dollar Sphere estimate.
“As of right now, we don’t know exactly where the fight is going to be at,” Mayweather told Vegas Sports Today.
“We don’t know the location of the fight. The Sphere is one of the places that they talked about. We don’t know if it’s a hundred percent going to be there. And this is not actually a fight, it’s an exhibition. It’s an exhibition, so we’re both winners. We just want to go out there and entertain the people and put on a good show.”
Mayweather defeated Manny Pacquiao more than a decade ago in a fight that was already a decade too late.
Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) was last seen sleepwalking his way through back-to-back fights against John Gotti III, part of his exhibition retirement tour that still hasn’t generated enough to pay this tab. As for Pacquiao (62-8-3), he recently ended his retirement to draw Mario Barrios last July in Las Vegas.
“Money” turned 49 last month, which puts him roughly two years older than “Pac Man.” Mayweather is also attached to a Mike Tyson fight in Africa, but that bout has also seen its fair share of changes. Maybe the fact that nobody cares about either fight has left promoters hesitant to pull the trigger.
There’s always this potential career change…
