University of South Florida head coach Bryan Hodgson has turned down the Syracuse job, according to Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman. Adam Zagoria confirmed that report, each citing an anonymous source. Hodgson will decide between the Providence job and staying at South Florida.
Hodgson’s reason for turning down the job are believed to be financial. Syracuse had just shy of a reported $8 million to put together a roster in 2025-26. That includes both revenue share from the athletic department and third-party NIL. That $8 million number was believed to be middle of the pack in the ACC for spending for a basketball roster.
Hodgson, in his third year as a head coach, has a career record of 70-36. His South Florida Bulls will play Louisville in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday. A mentee of Alabama head coach Nate Oats, Hodgson was given his start in the business at the division one level as an assistant to Oats at University at Buffalo. Hodgson followed Oats to Alabama before getting his head coaching start at Arkansas State three seasons ago. Hodgson was born in Olean N.Y., and raised in Jamestown, N.Y. His rising stock and Western New York upbringing made him a natural candidate for the job.
The Syracuse job was though to be a two-horse race between Hodgson and former Syracuse star Gerry McNamara. In his second season with the Siena Saints, McNamara has guided his team the NCAA Tournament. The No. 16 seeded Siena will play No. 1 seed Duke in the First Round on Thursday.
