The Colorado Rockies managed to avoid history on Friday by notching their 42nd win of the season. The victory voids the chance that the Rockies would tie the Chicago White Sox for the worst record in MLB modern history. Now with that cat out of the bag, the Rockies will look to take the series against a veteran groundball machine.
Germán Márquez (3-14, 6.73 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies in what may be his final time in purple at Coors Field. This season, Márquez has been a far cry from
the excellent pitcher that made him a Rockies great. Struggles with command and a lack of strikeout stuff have left him on the wrong side of plenty of games this season. His last outing on the road against San Diego resulted in seven runs on 10 hits over just 2 1/3 innings. He fared a little better his last time at home with four runs on eight hits over five innings against the San Francisco Giants. In his career, Márquez is 31-32 with a 5.20 ERA in 96 appearances at 20th and Blake.
Kyle Hendricks (7-10, 5.01 ERA) will take the mound for the Los Angeles Angels. The former Cub has been serviceable for the Halos this season, tallying 152 2/3 innings over 29 games. It’s been business as usual for Hendricks as the soft-tosser gets plenty of ground balls while his mistakes get punished. He’s notched over 100 strikeouts in a season for the first time since 2021 and has been prone to more fly balls this year. Still, he’s been effective against the Rockies in his career, posting a 3.95 in 11 starts. His last outing came against the Seattle Mariners, in which he was banged up for nine runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings of work. He did have six strikeouts, though.
