The 2026 FIFA World Cup has belonged to football’s superstars. Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Norway’s Erling Haaland; France’s attacking trio of Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembélé; England’s Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham—you name it, they are all performing at the peak of their powers.
Naturally, performances of this caliber bring comparison. But trying to choose between these footballing titans is like deciding whether the Mona Lisa is superior to Michelangelo—they are both masterpieces
in their own right.
Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano knows this dilemma better than anyone. The Frenchman was recently asked by Sky’s Florian Plettenberg who he would choose between his Bayern club teammate, Harry Kane, and his fellow countryman, Kylian Mbappé.
Upamecano wasted no time dancing around the question, just like he dances around an aggressive attacking press.
“I’m very happy with Harry Kane at Bayern,” said the 27-year-old defender with laugh (via @iMiaSanMia). “But here, in our French attack, we also have a lot of quality, and that’s great.”
Both attackers have been in scintillating form for club and country this season. Kane managed a staggering 61 goals and seven assists across all competitions for Bayern, while Mbappé found the back of the net 42 times and provided six assists for Real Madrid. In the World Cup, England’s talisman has registered six goals and one assist, whereas Mbappé has scored eight goals and assisted three for Les Bleus.
Deciding between Mbappé and Kane may be nearly impossible, but one thing is certain — it’s a blessing to see two of football’s very best at their very best.
If you were in Upamecano’s shoes, who would you pick?
