The Seattle Seahawks resumed training camp practice after taking Sunday off. It was another non-padded practice, with fans not permitted for attendance until (likely very smoky, low air quality) Tuesday. Probably the biggest storyline(s) from Monday is the team’s injury situation, which isn’t hitting the absolute top of the depth chart, but there was an injury suffered in practice and a new concern regarding fullback Robbie Ouzts.
Here’s a recap of the notable events and news.
Robbie Ouzts injured
again, clarity coming soon
“We’re going to try to find out more information with Robbie’s situation. I’ll just leave it at that right now. We’ll have an update for you sooner than later.”
Those were the words of Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald after Seattle’s second-year fullback missed another practice due to an undisclosed injury. Having missed the end of the Super Bowl run with a neck injury, this is a bit concerning regarding what is ailing Ouzts.
Julian Neal, Jake Bobo still not practicing
Seattle’s rookie cornerback and fan favorite wide receiver have missed several practices in a row due to injury. Defensive lineman Mike Morris has also sat out a couple of practices with his own injury. Mike Macdonald has not raised any concerns regarding long-term injuries for any of those players. He said that Neal is a “shorter term” return, at this point.
Noah Igbinoghene has been getting more nickel reps while Neal has been out.
Jacardia Wright suffers leg injury
Seattle’s second-year undrafted running back did not finish practice after injuring his leg, per the Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta. We’re still unsure of the severity, but if it was super terrible I imagine there would’ve been stronger noise about it. It’s still nevertheless unfortunate for Wright, who missed almost all of last year on practice squad IR after hurting his ankle against the New Orleans Saints.
Bud Clark continues to get work with starters
The Seahawks’ rookie safety has been eased into life in the big leagues. After spending the early portion of camp with the reserves, he’s steadily getting more experience with the projected starting defense. That also means there will be some growing pains and lumps to take even through any successes.
“Bud’s one of those rookies that we’re asking a lot of them right now and I’m really impressed with how he’s handling it,” Mike Macdonald said. “There’s things where it’s not perfect, but how he goes about his business is what we’re looking for. And I think he needs to trust that he’s going to come out of the the fog, and take it from there. But I think I it’s important to start building a relationship with those guys and having a feel for, you know, the speed of the game with the ones and how we communicate and how we play and and he’s doing a good job.“
NBA Finals head coach shows up to training camp
San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, a Seattle native and high school graduate, was a special guest at Seahawks camp. The son of former Sonics forward John Johnson, Mitch just took the Spurs to the NBA Finals and knocked out the reigning champion Zombie Sonics (aka the Oklahoma City Thunder) in the process. The Spurs did lose to the New York Knicks in the Finals, but the important thing is that the Thunder didn’t win the title again.
As for former Seahawks, the trio of Cliff Avril, Duane Brown, Warren Moon, and Michael Bennett were also in Renton to check in on the new generation of ‘Hawks.
The Sam Darnold to Rashid Shaheed connection is growing
One of the points of emphasis for the offense this season is getting speedy receiver Rashid Shaheed more involved in the passing game. Shaheed came over in a midseason trade from the New Orleans Saints last year, and while he had flashes of effectiveness as a receiver, his best moments were generally on special teams. With a full offseason to work with Darnold, the early returns in camp are positive.
