Drew McIntyre is being forced to defend the WWE championship against Cody Rhodes on this week’s (Mar. 6) episode of SmackDown. Whoever walks out as the champ will put the title on the line next month against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42.
During an interview with Complex Graps, Drew was asked about the possibility that the WWE title match at WrestleMania turns into a 4-way match, given his beef with Rhodes and recent attacks on Jacob Fatu. The idea is not completely out of left field, as there was a recent rumor
that indicated WWE has considered adding more wrestlers to the match.
McIntyre dismissed the dumb logic behind that idea, because it defeats the entire purpose of Orton’s win at Elimination Chamber.
“The way I see it is, why did we have Elimination Chamber if it’s not a one-on-one match? Right now it’s myself and Randy Orton. I got to go in there Friday and get through Cody.
As I said, it’s BS. It’s a breach of contract. Anyone but Cody. And I know how good he is, so I’m going in Friday with a different game plan. I can’t even suggest parts of my game plan right now, because I have to survive Friday. I have to get through Cody…leave that show as champion, and walk into WrestleMania as champion for a one-on-one match. Every title match in my opinion should be one-on-one at WrestleMania, and it’s gonna be Drew McIntyre [versus] Randy Orton once I get through Cody Rhodes this Friday.
My family’s tickets are all paid. They’re all coming to America. The hotels are booked. And they’re gonna see the baby boy, their brother, their uncle, walk out as champion.”
McIntyre isn’t happy about SmackDown GM Nick Aldis booking him in a title match against Rhodes this week due to his interference in the chamber match. Drew said his legal team is working to handle this problem before Friday night, and he also teased a fight against Aldis.
“There’s always other factors at play. Management. Nick Aldis fired up like he’s gonna do something to me. I was like, come on Nick, when is the last time you were in the ring? I said you look great, but all show and zero go now ’cause I’ll drop you right on your arse.
And as I said, there’s things going on behind the scenes right now to try and make sure that match gets fixed before Friday, because it shouldn’t even be happening. If it does happen, I’ve got my own game plan to make sure I leave with that title.”
Do you agree that the rumor of a 4-way (or more) WWE title match at WrestleMania 42 never made sense? Does the more recent rumor of a one-on-one title match between Rhodes and Orton seem more plausible, or will Drew’s game plan work in terms of retaining the title tomorrow night against WWE’s golden boy?
Let me know how you see the WWE title scene playing out between now and WrestleMania 42, Cagesiders.
