After an exciting offseason filled with questions surrounding the New Orleans Saints first round pick, we finally have answers. At pick 8, the Saints selected WR Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State. There were some great options at 8, but the team ended up going with Tyson.
To understand why this might happen, we first need to examine the roster. Besides maybe EDGE, WR is by far the Saints’ top need. Yes, Chris Olave is the top option, and an extension should be on its way, but this team desperately
needs talent in the WR room.
Olave stayed healthy last season, but we saw what can happen if he isn’t. With Devaugn Vele dealing with injuries, this WR room was in despair, and in Week 18, it was the driving reason the Saints lost. Now, the Saints’ WR room is complete, and besides maybe RG, so is the offense.
Now, focusing on Tyson as a prospect, he is arguably the best WR in the draft. Besides the injuries, which will be talked about, Tyson has the high-level talent that would make him a high-level prospect in almost every draft class. His route running is excellent, and in the air, he looks like he is floating at times. Also, his ability to adjust to any pass makes him everything a QB will want, especially Tyler Shough.
Back to those injuries. Clearly, the Saints feel good about them, which means the pesky hamstring that has been a problem during this draft process is good to go. That was really the top worry, and the other injury concerns were the same that existed during Shough’s draft process. The Saints have shown interest in players who have overcome adversity, and Tyson fits that.
Moving forward in the draft, defense needs to be a focus for New Orleans, and I would be shocked if EDGE is not the pick in Round 2.
