The Philadelphia Eagles issued their second official injury report of the week on Thursday in advance of their Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
The Eagles listed six players under DID NOT PARTICIPATE: Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, Drew Kendall, Jonathan Greenard, Marcus Epps, and Hollywood Brown.
Barkley is reportedly “week-to-week” with a hamstring injury. He’s on track to miss Sunday’s game. In his absence, the Eagles have Will Shipley and Dameon Pierce at running back. To
be determined if they’ll ride with two RBs or use a temporary practice squad elevation on either Carson Steele or Jaydon Blue to give them a third backfield option.
Smitty is tracking to miss a second straight game due to a hamstring injury. Not ideal. Seems like he might be able to suit up in Week 6, though.
Kendall missing two straight practices points to him not playing against the Jags. Nick Sirianni has an obsession with “competitive advantage” (and that’s definitely really helping the team this year!), so, maybe the following observation from practice is just a red herring. But practice squad interior offensive lineman Jake Majors was getting first-team center looks during the media-attended portion of Thursday’s session. If we take this development to be indicative of who’s actually starting, the Eagles’ offensive line could look like this from left to right: Jordan Mailata, Willie Lampkin, Jake Majors, Tyler Steen, Markel Bell. Fred Johnson and Micah Morris are currently the only backup offensive linemen on the roster. Majors is one of four practice squad blockers with the others being John Ojukwu, Kiran Amegadjie, and the recently added James Brockermeyer.
Greenard is on track to miss his third game this season. He might be able to return next week. Until then, the Eagles will roll with Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Arnold Ebiketie, and A.J. Epenesa as their top four edge rushers.
Epps is probably going to miss his second straight start. Look for Michael Carter II to play safety next to Andrew Mukuba in nickel packages with Cooper DeJean next to Mukuba in base defense.
Brown is set to miss his third game in a row. And he didn’t actually play in Week 1 despite being active. So, he’ll have zero snaps in four out of five games so far.
The Eagles listed five players under LIMITED PARTICIPATION: Dontayvion Wicks, Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, Dallas Goedert, and Fred Johnson.
Wicks is a new addition to the report with a hamstring injury; he apparently got hurt during Thursday’s practice. Not a good development. Normally the No. 2 WR, Wicks was WR1 with DeVonta out. If Smith, Brown, and Wicks all can’t play, the Eagles will be down to these four wide receivers on the roster: Darius Cooper, Makai Lemon, Britain Covey, and Elijah Moore. They also have Xavier Gipson and the recently re-signed Erik Ezukanma on the practice squad. Outside of Cooper (the official Eagles wide receiver of Bleeding Green Nation), not exactly the most imposing group.
Baun was limited for the second day in a row. Guessing he’ll be upgraded to full on Friday but we’ll see if that’s the case.
Campbell was upgraded from DNP on Wednesday to limited on Thursday. If he can’t play, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. figures to start in his place. I wonder if Campbell’s struggles might lead to Trot Jr. getting some more rotational snaps anyway.
Goedert told reporters that he feels “really good.” Seems like he’s going to give it a go. Will be interested to see how the Eagles distribute their tight end snaps among Goedert, Zach Ertz, Johnny Mundt, and E.J. Jenkins.
Assuming he can play, Fred Johnson figures to be the swing tackle behind Jordan Mailata and Markel Bell. He might also be the top backup option at guard, unless the Eagles trust Micah Morris in that capacity instead.
The Eagles listed one player under FULL PARTICIPATION: Quinyon Mitchell.
Mitchell was upgraded to full after being limited on Wednesday. He’s going to play this week, which is an important development for the Eagles’ defense.
