Newcastle United are considering signing a new striker this summer, with Nick Woltemade’s long-term future already uncertain, according to a report by Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey.
Veysey wrote that Newcastle have made acquiring a centre-forward a top priority ahead of next season and could be open to selling Woltemade despite signing him only last year.
“Newcastle United will look to sell Nick Woltemade this summer amid interest from Bayern Munich, sources have told Football Insider,” Veysey reported.
Woltemade began his Newcastle career strongly but entered the weekend on a run of 14 matches without a goal under Eddie Howe.
Football Insider reported that this downturn in form has led to discussions internally about whether to move the Germany international on as part of a broader reshaping of the attack.
Newcastle sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer for a record-breaking fee and invested part of it in the German striker. That said, he has struggled to replace Isak’s output, let alone wildly underperformed of late.
Woltemade, along with fellow-acquisition Yoane Wissa, were brought in to fix Newcastle’s offensive woes, but either because of underperforming or injuries, neither of them has done anything to aid with that.
Woltemade has scored nine goals in 37 appearances across all competitions this season, and the report suggests that Newcastle could get some interest in the player if they decide to sell, given Woltemade’s reputation before his move to England.
Bayern Munich were among the clubs interested in the 23-year-old prior to his move to St James’ Park.
Football Insider reported that Newcastle will reassess their attacking options at the end of the campaign as they decide whether Woltemade remains part of Howe’s long-term plans.
