Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that club captain and women’s football icon Alexia Putellas will leave the club at the end of the season after 14 years in the Catalan capital.
There had been much speculation about Alexia’s future in recent weeks and her departure is now confirmed, with the captain set to say an official goodbye in a ceremony at the club on Wednesday. Alexia leaves as the club’s record scorer with 232
goals in over 500 appearances and with a staggering 38 trophies won including 4 Champions Leagues and 10 league titles. She’s also a two-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup and twice Nations League champion with Spain, and is undoubtedly the greatest female player of all-time.
Alexia’s legacy goes beyond her goals, assists and trophies: she put Barça Femení on the map, and the Blaugrana’s dominance this decade with Alexia as the team’s leader and captain has helped grow the success and popularity of women’s football.
There will never be another Alexia Putellas.
Farewell, Queen.
