The Dodgers and Padres don’t play each other again during this regular season, so the National League West will be decided by how they do against other teams over the final next weeks. So let’s look at the remaining schedule for the two teams.
Common games
Both the Dodgers and Padres have 31 games remaining, and 15 of them — almost half — are against the same teams.
The Dodgers host the Diamondbacks from August 29-31, and the Padres host Arizona from September 26-28.
The Rockies come to Los Angeles from September
8-10, and finish that week with four games at Petco Park.
On Monday night the Reds start a three-game series at Dodger Stadium, and Cincinnati plays in San Diego from September 8-10.
The Padres are in Seattle for three games starting Monday night, and the Dodgers finish off the regular season on the road against the Mariners from September 26-28.
The Dodgers and Padres also both play the Orioles, though I’m cheating a bit here because Baltimore is in San Diego from September 1-3 while the Dodgers go to Camden Yards from September 5-7.
NL West games
The one imbalance from that group of common games was the one extra game the Padres have hosting the Rockies. The Padres also play at Coors Field from September 5-7.
The Dodgers are in Arizona for the final week of the regular season, from September 23-25.
The Dodgers have two more series against the Giants — in San Francisco from September 12-14, and for four games in Los Angeles from September 18-21.
The Padres are 20-9 (.690) against non-Dodgers NL West teams, while the Dodgers are 16-7 (.696) against the non-Padres teams within the division.
Other division leaders
The Dodgers host the NL East-leading Phillies from September 15-17, while the Padres host the best-record-in-MLB Brewers from September 22-24 in the final week of the season.
The rest
Both teams have one other road series against National League teams, with the Dodgers in Pittsburgh from September 2-4 and the Padres playing the Mets at Citi Field from September 16-18.
While the Dodgers have six more NL West games remaining than the Padres, San Diego fills in that gap with two other interleague series left — at the Twins this weekend (August 29-31) and at the White Sox from September 19-21.
Both the Dodgers and Padres have 16 home games and 15 road games left on the schedule.
