The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers haven’t opened the season against each other since the 2005 season. That’s 20 years of football between Week 1 openers, and it’s fair to say a lot has happened since then. The Lions have had about 15 years or miserable football, but have recently pulled themselves into NFL relevancy and a potential Super Bowl window. The Packers had the entire Aaron Rodgers era, but are now still trying to figure out what they have in Jordan Love.
Back in 2005, the Lions suffocated
the Packers en route to a 17-3 opening week victory. But as a very important reminder, that Week 1 game wasn’t indicative of how the season was going to go for the Lions. They would end up finishing the year 5-11, just barely above Green Bay, whose 4-12 record still stands as their worst season since 1991.
But that’s all in the past now. The Lions are coming off back-to-back NFC North titles and a franchse-best 15-2 seasons. The Packers were a respectable 11-6 last year, and after last week’s Micah Parsons trade, they are suddenly the favorites to win the division. Safe to say the 2025 Lions and Packers are significantly better than their 20-year-old counterparts.
