Two Big Blue legends were inducted into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame this week.
Randall Cobb and Tayshaun Prince were two members of the four-person class, joining former Louisville gymnast and gymnastics
coach Carole Liedtke and Nora Martin Ross, one of the most accomplished female trap shooters in the United States, Nora Martin Ross (referred to as the best female shooter since Annie Oakley).
The newest hall of fame class members were nominated by a committee comprised of more than a dozen sports media professionals throughout Kentucky.
Cobb and Prince are certainly deserving of the honor. Cobb was dominant during his time at Kentucky as a do-it-all guy. Whether he was playing quarterback, wide receiver, or as a kick/punt returner, Cobb made his mark across the field.
In 2010, Cobb set the SEC single-season record for all-purpose yardage (2,396 yards) and the Kentucky career record for touchdowns (37). He was also a finalist for the Paul Hornung award for most versatile player.
Cobb nearly led Kentucky to an upset over eventual-champion Auburn and Cam Newton by finishing the day with 4 total touchdowns (1 passing, 2 rushing, and 1 receiving). Other favorite Randall Cobb memories include his touchdown catch against Louisville in 2009 that gave Kentucky the lead and the win, and the final touchdown to give Kentucky the comeback win against South Carolina in 2010.
Of course, Cobb carved out a solid NFL career, playing 13 seasons with the Packers, Cowboys, Texans and Jets, compiling more than 600 career receptions, over 7,600 receiving yards and 54 receiving touchdowns.
For Prince, he was a two-time All-American during his time in Lexington and was SEC Player of the Year in 2001.
For those of us in our late 20s and early 30s, one of our core memories from our childhood of UK Basketball fandom was Tayshaun knocking down the threes against North Carolina. My other favorite Tayshaun moment at Kentucky was when he scored 41 points against Tulsa in the tournament, and it felt like he couldn’t miss from deep.
Prince also carved out a long professional career, winning a title with the Detroit Pistons in 2004 and an Olympic Gold Medal with the U.S. “Redeem Team” at the 2008 Beijing Games. Overall, Prince played 14 NBA seasons and ranks Top 10 in Pistons’ history in games played, points, assists and blocked shots.
UK fans have a lot of great memories of Cobb and Prince in the Blue and White, and they definitely deserve this honor.
