The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is finally over

; long live the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition. With the Browns final preseason game kicking off on Thursday night, fans will get a chance to see the other two quarterbacks after Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders have been the focus all offseason.

With most Cleveland fans expecting Watson to play six or fewer games, Sanders could see the field quickly, leaving Dillon Gabriel and/or Taylen Green waiting in the wings to be the next

man up, depending on how the initial 53-man roster plays out.

After seeing Gabriel start last season, many fans are excited about what the athletic Green could do on the field. Luke Easterling actually called Green the Browns “most talented quarterback” as he looked at underrated rookies that could make an impact this year:

That would be Green, who brings a rare skill set with his combination of size (6-6, 230), arm strength, and elite speed/athleticism. He still needs a ton of refinement when it comes to being an efficient, consistent passer from the pocket, but he was well worth a sixth-round pick after the promise he showed at Arkansas. It’ll take some time, but Green’s potential is through the roof.

Seth Walder of ESPN believes that Green will be starting by the end of this season and compete with whoever Cleveland selects early in the 2027 NFL draft:

Cleveland’s 2027 quarterback competition will be between a first-round pick and … Taylen Green. This essentially is a bet that Green will be starting for the Browns by the end of 2026. He might be the fourth-string quarterback at the moment, but I hardly think this is far-fetched, considering the poor track records of Watson (as a Brown), Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.

Given HC Todd Monken’s love for explosive plays from the quarterback position, Green’s ability to run and his big arm could become more and more intriguing if any combination of Watson, Sanders, and/or Gabriel falters as the 2026 season rolls on.
