Marquette men’s soccer ultimately needed just one goal to move to 3-0-2 on the season on Saturday night at Valley Fields. It was 1-0 at the final horn against Lipscomb, with Mitchell Dryden’s quick movement goal on a low angle shot in the 20th minute making the difference for the Golden Eagles.
If that’s kind of fuzzy to see for you, the match was streamed for free on YouTube,
so here’s a link that starts about 10 seconds before the goal. Dryden’s quick switch of direction is what let him get the shot off, but it also looks like keeper Noah Kump got a mitt on it, or maybe there was just a bounce one way or another. In any case, it went in as the Golden Eagles outshot the Bisons 7-4 in the first half.
While the match finished at 1-0, and that’s enough to win it, it feels like head coach David Korn impressed upon his team the need/desire/whatever for another goal before the second 45 minutes was up. Marquette outshot Lipscomb 16-4 after intermission, more than doubling up their shot total from the first half. MU didn’t lay back late either, as four of those 16 shots came in the final 10 minutes alone.
How about a quick highlight package, including two of the better attempts in the second half, courtesy of GoMarquette.com?
Up Next: Believe it or not, it’s time for Big East play. It’s also time for Marquette’s first road match of the season, and coming up on Friday, September 19, the Golden Eagles will be down in Omaha to face Creighton to get Big East action started. The Bluejays are 3-2-2 on the year and are on a four match unbeaten streak with wins in each of their last three (do the math here) and a scoreless draw against Tulsa right before that.
