The first week of the college football season is officially over and it appears that the race for the Mountain West Championship might be more wide open than most expected. We saw some solid performances from new faces and some highlight reel plays on the defensive side of the ball. With that being said, let’s see who our top performers were from the opening weekend of the college football season.
Offensive Player of the Week
Chris Durr Jr. (Wyoming)
The sophomore wide receiver had a career day in Wyoming’s 10-0 win over Akron.
Durr Jr. caught eight passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. With weapons like Durr Jr. and Gyllenborg, it looks like the Cowboys might have a dangerous passing attack this season.
Defensive Player of the Week
Aamaris Brown (UNLV)
The senior defensive back had a career day for the Rebels. Brown had an interception that he returned 52 yards for a touchdown. The pick six put the Rebels in firm control on their way to a comfortable victory over Sam Houston.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Jordan Malau’ulu (Fresno State)
The freshman wide receiver had the biggest play of his young career, returning a punt 54 yards. Malau’ulu narrowly missed out on a touchdown, but the young player is showing why he can be a dangerous weapon for the Bulldogs.
Newcomer of the Week
Anthony Colandrea (UNLV)
The Virginia transfer had another solid day for the Rebels. Colandrea was extremely efficient completing 19 of 23 passes for 249 yards and two touchdown in UNLV’s 38-21 victory over Sam Houston. Colandrea also added a rushing touchdown in the Rebels win.
