The Dallas Wings announced today that Azzi Fudd, the team’s number one overall selection in the 2026 draft, will miss the remainder of the 2026 season. Per the team’s X account:
The Wings will make the WNBA playoffs, so it’s
worth noting specifically that the Wings are ruling Fudd out for that run as well as the regular season.
Fudd finishes her rookie campaign playing 30 games and averaging 13.1 points while shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc. This season she set the WNBA rookie record for made threes in a quarter with five and the Wings rookie record for most made threes in a game with six.
The announcement comes after the team has been coy over the last week, with Fudd sitting out practice and games going back over two weeks. Fudd’s right knee injuries are well documented at this point:
- High school ACL and MCL tear requiring multiple surgeries, resulting in her missing most of her sophomore and junior seasons.
- While at UConn she tore the same ACL again, along with that knee’s meniscus, resulting in her missing her junior year.
- During her senior year, she suffered a sprain to the same knee, resulting in her missing multiple weeks.
A little more than two hours before the team made the announcement, Wings coach Jose Fernandez told reporters he had no new news to share.
Suffice it to say, this is a devastating blow for a Wings team that has played a very uneven season, beating the league’s worst teams while failing to perform well against the WNBA’s best teams. The Dallas Wings sits four games above .500 and four and a half games ahead of the Portland Fire, so unless they lose every single game and Portland goes on a win streak, Dallas is making the playoffs.
