It’s nice that the folks at ESPN felt that the season opener for the Hurricanes warranted being carried on a national platform, and the game sure delivered. While several can complain about the fact that it
was on ESPN’s streaming service, at least it meant they were able to show the entirety of the Storm Surge after the win plus the interview with Seth Jarvis was a treasure.
That said we as fans are used to our home team announcers calling the games. Now you could have synched the call from the Hurricanes Radio Network to hear the familiar pair, but tonight is the night that really feels like the opening to the season. Tonight we get the 6:30 PM pregame start time with Hanna Yates and Shane Willis sitting in the concourse of Lenovo Center, Mike Maniscalco up in the booth, and Tripp Tracy on the bench and interviewing Rod Brind’Amour. Then when the puck drops Mike and Tripp will guide us through the game as the Hurricanes take on the Flyers.
So now is the time to make sure however you subscribe to FanDuel Sports Network it is back up and active. If you’re a cable subscriber, double-check your guide to make sure you still have access as some companies have moved around the level that FDSN will be on. You’ll have time to call and get it updated. If you’re a streaming customer like Fubo, you should be all set. Living in the Carolinas and have cut the cord? You’ll need to sign up for the FanDuel Sports Network app.
As for today, both teams are coming off playing Thursday. The Flyers lost close one to Florida 2-1, while the Canes had their thrilling 6-3 win over the Devils.
Unlike the Canes who had an optional skate on Friday, Philadelphia flew in to Raleigh and hit the ice full-speed for practice. This is how it looked when they practiced:
It’s the talk of Flyers writers that the skating Grittys have already shaken up the lines despite the close loss. Philly isn’t expected to contend in the Metro this year, but early in the season when teams aren’t familiar with each other surprises can happen. The Hurricanes will be facing a tough task before their State Fair trip out west begins next week.
