During Houston’s 35-11 defeat to Texas Tech, the Cougars lost more than just the game. On a failed fourth down conversion in the second quarter, starting quarterback Conner Weigman absorbed a hit as he released
the ball toward tight end Tanner Koziol. Weigman collided with the turf and was slow to get up and immediately proceeded to the locker room. He never returned to the sideline after halftime as backup Zeon Chriss-Gremillion — who started seven games for Houston in 2024 — finished the contest at quarterback.
In his weekly Monday press conference, Fritz provided an update on Weigman, confirming the quarterback suffered a concussion vs. Texas Tech.
“Conner Weigman right now is in concussion protocol but doing pretty darn well,” Fritz said. “Today he was gonna do some stuff, but he wasn’t feeling very well — had a cold. He’ll work back into it tomorrow and the next day and should be full speed. There’s a protocol that they go through,” Fritz said. “Step one on Sunday, then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and obviously the game on Saturday, so we’re looking forward to having him playing for us on Saturday.”
If Weigman clears protocol, he is slated to make his sixth start of the season. Through five games, Weigman averages 182 passing yards per game on a 59.3 completion rate, firing six touchdowns to two interceptions. He also has attained 183 rushing yards and four touchdowns, attaining a career-high 83 rushing yards in Week 3 vs. Colorado. Weigman led a 14-point comeback in the final seven minutes at Oregon State, and Houston hopes he can return to resurrect the offense — which saw a season-low 11 points against the Red Raiders.
“Each day he’s gotta make progress, feel better, feel good,” Fritz said. “Yesterday he was feeling much, much better than he did on Saturday. Today he was feeling good other than the cold. We’re gonna start doing some things with movements, lifting weights, football movement, all those kind of things. I kind of stay out of all this stuff. We have great doctors and an athletic training staff, and that’s their job, and they do a great job of making sure our guys are well taken care of.”
Fritz fully expects Weigman to jump back into the starting role this Saturday, as Houston battles Oklahoma State (which will be down its top two quarterbacks Hauss Hejny and Zane Flores) at 12 p.m. ET in Stillwater.
“We’re gonna watch every single day, but it seems like everything is trending in the correct direction,” Fritz said.
