It was announced on Friday that the Broncos have released veteran safety Taylor Rapp. However, that was just a procedural move, as Rapp re-signed to the team’s practice squad today. The team also announced that they are elevatingTaylor Rapp, as well as reserve running back Cody Schrader, to the game-day roster for Sunday’s game vs. the Carolina Panthers.
This will be Rapp’s third and final practice squad elevation, while this will be Schrader’s second practice squad elevation.
With Brandon Jones ruled out and Talanoa Hufanga questionable, the Broncos will elevate safety Taylor Rapp to provide depth and potentially start Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers. It remains to be seen if Hufanga will play or not, but either way, Rapp should see significant playing time once again this Sunday.
Special teams star Devon Key has also seen some playing time at safety and could get the start opposite Rapp if both Jones and Hufanga are sidelined. I also wouldn’t be surprised if reserve safety JL Skinner gets some added playing time after his big-time hit on Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker at the goal line during last Sunday’s thrilling victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Either way, the Broncos will need to rely on their safety depth for at least one more week.
As for Cody Schrader, he will serve as the Broncos RB3 for the second straight week. Look for another heavy dose of JK Dobbins and rookie Jonah Coleman at running back, with Schrader serving as depth and playing special teams. With both RJ Harvey and Tyler Badie on the injured reserve, Schrader is getting the call at running back. The Broncos have been calling around about running backs prior to the upcoming trade deadline, so this might be the final week we see Schrader elevated, but time will tell.
The team also announced that they have activated wide receiver Pat Bryant from the injured reserve while also placing defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike on the injured reserve. They also signed reserve cornerback/returner Sam Fresch Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster. So, it was an active Saturday for the Broncos when it came to roster transactions.
