The World Cup is over so Silly Season can now begin in earnest, and Chelsea just might follow our record-breaking acquisition of Morgan Rogers (soon to be official) with another big deal, this one for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.
The France international, who played three games at the World Cup including most of the semifinal and all of the third-place game, looks set to leave this summer and the Blues have been leading the race for his potential signature. But we’re going to have to pay
a pretty penny to complete the deal, with Palace reportedly setting an asking price at £60m.
That’s the word from the BBC as well as the Daily Mail, with the latter noting that we may not be too far off from meeting that demand: willing to offer £55m … and maybe just a tad bit more. Either way, a lot of money, but if that’s what our market dictates (based on conditions, inflation, and precedent), that’s the price we have to pay.
So that may just get the deal done and bring in the 26-year-old. Talks are continuing between the two sides but I would guess they may not need to be continuing for much longer. Is he markedly better than what we already got? I’m not so sure, but he does seem to have the right intangibles in terms of leadership and attitude.
