Overall, it was not an extremely successful day down on the farm for Atlanta’s minor league affiliates on Wednesday, as Gwinnett was the lone team to bring home a win. Still, there were plenty of highlights throughout the night, so let’s dive into it all.
(51-70) Gwinnett Stripers 8, (64-56) Memphis Redbirds 4
- Eddys Leonard, DH: 2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R
- Carlos Rodriguez, LF: 1-5, HR, 2 RBI, R
- David McCabe, 1B: 2-4, 2B, RBI, R
- Carlos Carrasco, SP: 6 IP, 6 H, ER, 2 BB, 4 K
As mentioned above, the Stripers were the lone team to claim a victory on Wednesday, thanks in large part to standout offensive performances.
Gwinnett wasted absolutely no times getting
on the scoreboard in this one. After Jesus Bastidas laced a one-out single, Carlos Rodriguez turned on an 0-1 sweeper to pull it over the right field wall, giving the Stripers an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The scoring didn’t stop there as later in the inning, Eddys Leonard launched a three-run homer, plating David McCabe and Jonathan Ornelas to extend the lead to 5-0 before the Stripers even took the field.
On the mound, Carlos Carrasco — who was recently brought back to the organization on a minor league deal after being designated for assignment — was tasked with protecting the early lead. Carrasco did his part, as across six innings, he limited the Memphis lineup to just one run on six hits, while walking a pair of batters and striking out four before giving way to the bullpen.
The Stripers tacked on an additional run in the top of the third, as David McCabe continued his hot start to his triple-A career by doubling home Ornelas to make it a 6-0 game. In the top of the sixth, Leonard came through once again, this time by cranking a leadoff homer to extend the lead to 7-0, while Gwinnett’s final run came in the top of the eighth as Conner Capel reached on an error while Leonard came around to score.
(48-65) Columbus Clingstones 4, (60-55) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 5
- Patrick Clohisy, RF: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
- Ethan Workinger, LF: 1-4, 2B, R
- Lucas Braun, SP: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, BB, 7 K
Despite taking an early lead in this one, the Columbus bullpen failed to stave off a comeback by Pensacola as the Clingstones came up on the short end of the stick on Wednesday.
While he did scatter seven hits on the night, starter Lucas Braun was very solid for Columbus. Across six innings, Braun allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters in the process.
While Braun was doing his thing, the Columbus offense gave him some early run support. In the bottom of the first, Patrick Clohisy scored via an Adam Zebrowski single to tie the game at 1-1. In the next frame, Clohisy once again came through, this time with a two-run homer to give the Clingstones their first and only lead of the night.
Leading 3-2 in the bottom of the Ethan Workinger crossed the plate on a David Fletcher single to extend the Columbus lead to 4-2.
While things were looking up for the Clingstones, Pensacola stormed back in the top of the eighth inning to score three runs and take a 5-4 lead. The Blue Wahoos tagged Amos Willingham for two of the runs before Rolddy Munoz came on to try and stoke the fire. However, Willingham walked a batter before exiting, which later came around to score, giving Pensacola the 5-4 lead which held on as the final.
(50-63) Rome Emperors 1, (48-65) Asheville Tourists 1 (SUSPENDED)
- Alex Lodise, SS: 1-2, 2B, R
- Isaiah Drake, CF: 1-1, RBI
- Adam Maier, SP: 2 IP, H, R, 3 BB, 2 K
The weather got the better of this one, as the game was suspended in the third inning due to rain. Rome and Asheville were tied 1-1 when the game was placed on hold, as Alex Lodise tallied a double to his credit and Isaiah Drake brought home the Emperors’ lone run of this one.
Wednesday’s game is scheduled to be completed on Thursday, Aug. 21.
(61-51) Augusta GreenJackets 1, (54-60) Columbia Fireflies 6
- Eric Hartman, CF: 1-2, R, 2 BB
- Joe Olsavsky, 1B: 2-4
- Cam Caminiti, SP: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Wednesday wasn’t Cam Caminiti’s best start, by far. However, the 18-year-old lefty still managed to keep Columbia in the game despite his offense falling flat.
All told, Caminiti went five innings, giving up four runs — two earned — on five hits while striking out four and walking three in the process. Regardless of the bump in the road, Caminiti is still carrying a stellar 2.44 ERA since joining Augusta, to go along with 59 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched.
Offensively, the GreenJackets scored only once, but failed to register an actual RBI on the night. Joe Olsavsky managed to go 2-4, while Eric Hartman scored Augusta’s lone run while going 1-2 with a pair of walks in the GreenJackets’ loss.
