In the biggest surprise of early announced cuts, the Detroit Lions are apparently parting ways with veteran receiver Greg Dortch, per Tom Pelissero.
For most of training camp and the preseason, Dortch was the presumed WR 4 behind the starting three receivers. Because of his history alongside Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and his strength as a kick and punt returner, most assumed his spot on the roster was safe. However, it’s worth noting he was often repping second in punt return order.
Who was first?
Veteran receiver Tom Kennedy.
It’s not yet known whether Kennedy will make the team’s 53-man roster, but this is certainly a promising sign for his chances. The 30-year-old receiver is one of the most trusted players on the roster, capable of playing any of the receiver positions in Detroit. He was also the only one in competition for the punt returner job with Dortch, per special teams coordinator Dave Fipp.
“You have the returner position with Kennedy and Dortch really at punt returner,” Fipp said. “(Dominic) Lovett fitting into that a little bit, but really probably Kennedy and Dortch right now in my opinion.”
We’ll see if there’s any way the Lions opt to bring Dortch back—as he’s a veteran not subject to waivers. But as of now, this is the Lions’ most surprising cut.
