The New York Yankees entered the 2025 campaign after losing a superstar from their 2024 pennant-winning club to free agency and their ace to season-ending surgery before Opening Day even arrived. Still,
their offseason pivot from re-signing Juan Soto landed them some players who helped them return to the postseason with the best record in the American League … albeit one that they shared with the Toronto Blue Jays, who won the AL East via head-to-head tiebreaker and relegated the Yankees to the Wild Card. Those same Jays then dispatched the Yanks with ease in a four-game ALDS after New York eliminated Boston in the first round.
Now that we have a little distance from the time of the Yankees’ own elimination, it’s time for our annual Roster Report Cards exercise, where we grade the most relevant Yanks to take the field in 2025. Remember that every grade issued is not necessarily each author’s own grade — it’s the staff-wide grade, calculated from an average. We’ll work through the list as the offseason rolls through November and early December. With one exception, the series will run on weekdays from today, October 27th, through December 12th, skipping only Thanksgiving so that we’re getting everyone relevant in a timely fashion. Note that we’re hitting important pending free agents first since the timing would be awkward if we were only getting to grading someone like Weaver or Williams (just to name two examples) near the end, who might have already signed by early December or late November.
