The Cleveland Browns had a chance to improve their record to 4-1 against the New York Jets, but a 17-12 loss dropped them to 3-2. It was an unfortunate loss, as the Jets were one of the more winnable games on their schedule. This loss could come back to haunt them later in the season. Looking at the bigger picture, what aspects of the Browns’ performance contributed most to their loss?
Special teams errors were a big factor in this matchup. From mishandled punts to missed extra points, this was a messy
game for this group. Field position mattered a lot, and Cleveland giving the Jets good field position certainly contributed to the loss.
Offensive inconsistency was the real nail in the coffin in this matchup. It is difficult to win a game when you score only 12 points. Going into this game, it was clear that the Browns wanted to establish the run, but they never really found their footing. Quinshon Judkins, Cleveland’s leading rusher, finished the game with just 44 rushing yards.
Given the rainy conditions, there were concerns about the Browns’ ability to catch the ball heading into the game, and they certainly struggled with this at times. Isaiah Bond, in particular, struggled with drops, including a wide-open touchdown pass and another late in the game that bounced off his hands. Small moments like that really add up in a close game.
