The Duke Chronicle’s latest profile is of Cameron Sheffield.
A transfer from Rice where he was teammates with Iffy Ufochukwu who followed him to Duke.
Sheffield was a good player for Rice, but at Duke he’s been a deep reserve. This is a really interesting part of Jon Scheyer’s team building, at least to us: he’s identifying portal players who are willing to not play as much but very willing to help develop and mentor younger teammates.
There are a lot of things we don’t know about, like how much money
guys like Sheffield and Ufochukwu get, but presumably it’s decent and competitive. What we like is their desire, as Coach K used to say, about being part of something bigger than themselves.
From the Chronicle: “His maturity will set the tone for a team that lacks the experience he has at the collegiate level. Barring some dramatic changes to Scheyer’s lineup, Sheffield’s minutes are unlikely to soar in the new season, but he will undoubtedly provide size, experience and hustle to the practice rotation.”
He’s good enough to play if called upon and has a lot of experience, but his role, like that of Jack Scott and possibly Ufochukwu, will probably not be as visible to fans. His influence, however, could be considerable.
Trivia: as far as we can recall, Duke has had three players named Cameron suit up in Cameron. Two, Sheffield and Cam Boozer, are on the current roster. The third was Canadian Cameron Hall, who played for Duke in the 1970’s.
