Barcelona drew 1-1 with Newcastle in the Champions League on Tuesday night at St James’ Park, with Lamine Yamal grabbing a late equaliser from the penalty spot.
The spot-kick was awarded after Malick Thiaw brought down Dani Olmo, giving Hansi Flick’s side the chance to salvage a decent result in the first leg of their last 16 tie.
Footage has now emerged of how Joao Cancelo played a part in helping Yamal before his spot-kick. The defender is seen protecting the penalty spot from Joelinton, ensuring
the Brazilian couldn’t make Yamal’s life harder but scuffing up the spot.
Yamal went on to coolly convert the penalty with the last kick of the match to give Barcelona a result to take back to Camp Nou ahead of next week’s second leg.
Flick has already called on his players to improve for the second leg.
“We have to accept it, but we have to do it much better next week,” he said.
“It’s not easy because here, the atmosphere was fantastic, they played also fantastic. Obviously, they have a lot of dynamic, very fast players and it’s not easy.
“You have to always been 100% focused, concentration has to be high and we did it in the defence very well.”
