A new Mizzou Athletics sports season is officially upon us! While the last few years I’ve assigned this written piece to one of our talented photographers, I’m taking it over this year, and will be selecting my favorites of the week. Since I am not a photographer at heart, my analysis will be more surface level, but I’ll try my best!
This week, this Tigers hosted just one event, the soccer home opener at the newly renovated Audrey J .Walton Stadium against SLU. Margo was on hand to shoot. While Missouri
ultimately was shut out in the game, losing 0-1 on a first-half penalty kick, they did so in front of a program record crowd of 2.324.
Hair Flip
I loved this photograph due to both the movement of freshman Rylie Morse’s hair and the movement of her legs where you can clearly see how strong he is. If you zoom out, you can also see how some of the crowd on hand, as reports indicated that the Walton bleachers were full, which meant that fans had to watch at the fence.
Head Ball
I love this photo! There’s so much action, from Mia Yang (center, 3) launching herself high into the air to head the ball, to Riley Wilkerson (22, right) watching on, waiting to see where it would end up.
Run, Bri, Run!
Senior Briana Buels was all over the place on Thursday, something that she said during the fall media day that the team was stressing. I loved both of these photos of Buels in motion, as it shows how involved she is in the Tiger offense.
Defensive Stopper
Per Jack’s recap, Olivia Chianelli (center) was one the of the bright spots for the Tigers, providing key defensive support in the middle of the pitch, and she was paramount in limiting the Billikens’ effectiveness. This photo was my favorite of the week, as this is exactly how I imagine it would feel to hit a ball with your head! Ouch.
Honorable Mention
The new College Photos of the Year photographs were hung up in the Reynolds Journalism Institute this week, and I was delighted to see one of former Rock M photographer Cal Tobias’ remarkable photos he took of Brady Cook flipping into the endzone in a game against Buffalo in September 2024.
See you next week, when I’ll be back next week with a mix of volleyball and soccer photos from Dan and Margo!
