The Minnesota Vikings are 5-0, but can Kevin O’Connell’s ball-control offense sustain a Super Bowl run with Kyler Murray? Tyler Forness and Dave Stefano break down why the offense is trending up despite an incomplete picture on The Real Forno Show.
Through five weeks, the Vikings have had just 18 snaps where Kyler Murray, Justin Jefferson, and Jordan Addison were all healthy. Tyler acknowledges the challenge: “We still don’t have a clear picture of what that will look like.” But he pushes back on national
media doubting the defense: “We are already seeing people in the national media move the goalpost and said, ‘Well, what if Brian Flores’ defense isn’t good for one game? And can Kyler Murray shoulder the load?’ I think that conceptual idea is kind of bullshit.”
The episode centers on O’Connell’s evolving relationship with Murray. Tyler offers a memorable analogy: “This is essentially a boyfriend and girlfriend trying to build a foundation for future success.” He adds, “You’re getting engaged. You’re getting married. You’re buying a house. You’re having kids. We need to start seeing some of that coming out of the bye.”
Tyler dismantles the idea that O’Connell won’t adapt: “This narrative that O’Connell doesn’t cater to his quarterbacks is a load of crap.” He traces evidence from Kirk Cousins to Sam Darnold, J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, Max Brosmer, Josh Dobbs, and now Murray.
Key Points:
- Vikings defense is historically good; offense is built to complement it — “the less you can keep your defense on the field, the better they’re going to be long term”
- Minnesota ranks 2nd in time of possession, averaging 32.9 seconds per play, giving the defense just 42 snaps per game vs. the total of 1,025 last season
- Run game is 28th in EPA per rush, but O’Connell’s commitment is a growth point: “He’s decided, ‘I’m not going to give up on the run game'”
- Jordan Mason’s return should boost zone concepts; Aaron Jones excels in gap schemes (duo, counter, pin pull)
- Short passes function as run game — Tyler credits chat member John Moscrip: “short passes are run game”
- Brandon Staley’s Saints defense is “not exactly a good coach”
- “We haven’t seen them unlocked” — Tyler’s most exciting takeaway
- Kevin O’Connell’s tendency to chase shots remains a concern: “That’s always been in his DNA”
Stefano adds: “If the offense ticks up and we get positive EPAs like we did last weekend, that will go into the number one special teams and the number one defense. We will be competitive when the playoffs come.” He finishes: “There’s nothing stopping the Vikings this season.”
