Unfortunately, the Rangers didn’t leave their troubles in April.
In the weekend series against Detroit, Texas went 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position. And that even makes it looks better than it was because the three hits came in their win, they were 0-for-11 RISP on Saturday and Sunday.
If the Rangers can’t hit once they’ve got people on base, this seems like a continuation of the early part of last season when they fired their hitting coach. It’s also starting to seem more psychological for
the players, trying too hard because they know their numbers aren’t good with men on base or in scoring position. And pretty soon something’s gotta give.
May is usually when it feels like the Rangers start to get into the swing of things, start identifying themselves as a whole and what they’re going to do for the season. And if this is it? Then like I said last week, they’re a very average team. Which isn’t necessarily bad but it’s not at all fun.
In the majors, Texas is in the bottom four for hits and bottom three for runs score, last in the AL for both stats.
The only hitter who has been consistent is Josh Jung. Which is very exciting to say considering his first two weeks of the season were atrocious. He looked entirely lost at the plate but whatever he has found in the last few weeks, he needs to share with the others because Jung is not only getting on base consistently, it feels like a guarantee he’s going to hit a double or two in each series. He’s currently fourth in the majors for doubles, with 12.
While we’re only 34 games into the season, the lack of big offense moments is starting to get old. Each week feels the same, having one good game and winning, and then fall flat.
They’re playing two teams leading their respective divisions in the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs this week. My expectations are low but I’m always happy to be surprised.
