The A’s are down a man again. After suffering an injury sliding into the wall making a catch in left field last night, Zack Gelof finds himself heading back to the injured list with what’s being called a right knee laceration. Infielder Joey Meneses is being recalled to take his spot on the active roster:
The A’s just can’t catch a break. Gelof had only just returned this past weekend from his first IL stint for the right hand injury
but now the squad will be without him again for the rest of the All-Star Break, and possibly the first few games of the second half as well depending on how deep the cut is. While he’s been one of the better hitters on the team thanks to cutting down on the strikeouts, he was only 3-for-18 since his return. Still, losing a versatile piece like him will make Mark Kotsay’s and the A’s job harder.
Meneses will be taking his roster spot and it’s clear the team is valuing offense over defense. While Meneses is almost exclusively a first baseman, he’s hit well in Triple-A all year, slashing .347/.398/.550 with 12 long balls. A hitter friendly environment, sure, but still solid production. This’ll be his second stint with the club this year; he went 2-for-14 with two RBI’s, three walks and two strikeouts in seven games.
