Sebastian Fundora spends some time talking to Fight Hub TV about his upcoming super welterweight title defense against Keith Thurman, his frustration with some of the sanctioning bodies, and where he’s
looking to take his career with a lot of great potential fights there to be made going forward. Check out some excerpts of what Fundora had to say below.
Fundora on whether Thurman is his toughest opponent yet
“I don’t think so but he’s a big name, a very, very big name. So we have to give the flowers to him because he’s definitely a great fighter.
“We had some hard competition coming up. I don’t want to mention no names but there was a couple fights that was very tough fights.”
On not getting a Xander Zayas fight
“I wasn’t at the table…Look, we fought Booker who was the #4 or #5 for the WBO and that was supposed to be the defense for the WBO because no one was mandatory at the time. But as soon as that fight happened they mandated that Zayas fight, so it’s like I thought we just defended this title for them.
“So they had their own plans, I guess that was their plan from the beginning, too. I remember after beating Tszyu the first time they wanted us to fight Crawford two months later, and our nose was still swollen — no care for the fighters. They have their own ideas or whatever, the WBO, it is what it is.”
On whether he’s looking to go undisputed at 154
“Right now, with having a taste of that (experience with the WBO) it kind of takes that idea away. I will fight all these guys but when it comes to those titles I’m just fighting with the WBC. I’m done with that.”
On whether he has considered moving up to 160
“We have all these great names at ‘54. Who do you have at 160, really? I mean, you have a couple of guys but I think 154 is very packed right now.”
