The NBA is an evolving league. Basketball in 2026 looks different than it did in 2016, let alone 2002 or 1987. Part of that change is due to evolution in regulation. Turn-of-the-millennium rules changes against hand-checking and recent prohibitions against putting body parts in the landing spaces of jump-shooters have changed the way the game is played. The entire style of play we’re seeing in the modern era can be traced back to the league’s adoption of the three-pointer way back in 1979.
