Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was asked about the potential of playing Jonas Urbig vs. Hoffenheim — something the coach seemed to indicate is not a topic for the media.
“Whether Jonas Urbig will get a chance or not isn’t something I want to discuss at a press conference. I want to keep the team as focused as possible on Hoffenheim. We have big confidence in Jonas Urbig and we believe in his future – but I want to win the game against Hoffenheim first and concentrate on that,” said Kompany.
With
Manuel Neuer playing so well, Kompany will likely struggle to break the veteran’s rhythm. However, there will be times when Neuer will need a break and Urbig will be ready for those moment. Hopefully, he will not be too rusty.
As for Neuer, Kompany loves what he as has seen from the squad’s captain.
“I see what Manu brings to training and in games – his performances are outstanding. For a long time, I only knew Manu as an opponent, but since we’ve been working together, his level has improved almost every week. He’s already achieved everything in his career. Therefore, it’s important to me that he enjoys the games. There are phases in your career when you don’t feel any pressure,” Kompany said. “At the very beginning, Lennart Karl, he has no pressure; he’s a young player. And when you’ve achieved everything like Manu, then it’s back to normal – no one can take the titles away from you anymore, you don’t have to prove anything to anyone.
“Even though his mentality is certainly different, he’ll see it differently; he still wants to prove everything to everyone. It’s a mixture of focus and total ease. I felt that at the end of my career, too. As a young player, you’re in full throttle mode; as you get older, you go with the flow of the game more and make decisions at the right moments. He’s in that phase of his career now.”
Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) added some information of its own as well on when we might see Urbig next:
It was recently discussed internally that Jonas Urbig would get at least one game in the coming weeks where there’s a mid-week game, before he starts in the second round of the DFB Pokal against his former club Köln, as Manuel Neuer is suspended for that game. As for tomorrow against Hoffenheim, however, Neuer is set to start.
Bayern Munich will travel to Hoffenheim with a quick turnaround d after the Bavarians took down Chelsea FC in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Bayern Munich will be looking to build off of its strong performances, but could face a stiff challenge from a suddenly formidable Hoffenheim team looking to protect its home turf and make some major headway in the Bundesliga.
