Week 7 was a goal fest in the league, with 137 goals scored, no draws, and three teams scoring six goals apiece.
What happened in Week 7
Cruz Azul opened the week hosting Pumas and won by a narrow 3-2 margin. Uchenna Kanu scored a brace to secure the win for La Máquina. Ana Martínez opened the score and Pumas’ Cristina Torres found the equalizer 11 minutes later. Costa Rican striker Priscila Chinchilla turned the tables and put the visitors up on the score only for Kanu to do the same later on.
Atlas hosted Atlante and got
the win on the goal scored by Aitana Montoya in the 60th minute.
FC Juárez did the same with Necaxa, winning with a lone goal tallied by Cynthia Peraza.
A big game awaited on Saturday because Chivas de Guadalajara was playing Rayadas de Monterrey. The visitors won 3-2, scoring three unanswered goals.
Centellas’ crisis continues, with seven losses in seven games.
Another 1-0 win was Pachuca vs León. Daniela Arias scored the goal for the visitors, confirming the poor tournament Tuzas is having so far. The the lack of goals scored by Charlyn Corral is disturbing after she finished last season with 14 goals in 15 matches.
Monterrey looked in control of the game, tallying its first goal in the fifth minute through Aerial Chavarin, the goalkeeper Blanca Félix scored an own goal, and Jermaine Seoposenwe put things 3-0 before the end of the first half (40’).
However, Chivas came alive in the second half, and Rayadas returned the favor, scoring an own goal through Daiane and then Lica Cervantes put things 3-2.
Nonetheless, the visitors held on that narrow lead for more than 30 minutes to get the win away from home.
The match between Querétaro and Puebla was a goalfest, with Gallos scoring six on the Poblanas. Enekia Lunyamila scored a brace after Nathaly Martínez opened the tab for the visitors. Then, the hosts scored three goals in the span of eight minutes, with one of them being an own goal. Dilary Heredia and María Barone completed the demolition for the 6-2 result.
The game between Atlético de San Luis and Santos was another goalfest, with Enyeliannys Higuera tallying a brace for San Luis. However, Santos put the score in their favor in the second half by scoring three unanswered goals and got the result away from home.
Another goalfest occurred when Toluca faced Tijuana. The Diablas crushed Xolas by 6-0, with Manuela Pavi scoring a hat-trick, Eugénie Le Sommer scoring a brace, and Sofia Jakonsson also tallying one goal.
Game of the week: América shines at the Azteca Stadium
Eagles and Amazonians battled head-to-head in the most anticipated game, until Club América took the match by the scruff of the neck.
The start of the game foreshadowed the outcome. Jana Gutiérrez opened the scoring in the 6th minute, and Xcaret Pineda made it 2-0 in the 35th minute. Captain Scarlett Camberos made it 3-0 three minutes later.
Things looked very grim for Tigres but they woke up in the 2nd half, pulling one back in the 50th minute through Thembi Kgatlana and two minutes later, she scored a brace.
It looked like it was going to be a close match from then on, but the Eagles had other plans. The always magical Geyse scored a banger in the 56th minute, and former Tigres’ Nancy “The Countess” Antonio sealed the deal for the hosts. She’s quickly become one of América’s most impactful players and was chosen as the player of the week.
What is more, the Brazilian has established herself as the first footballer to score in each of the seven games since the tournament started. In this way, she surpassed Arlindo dos Santos and Horacio Salgado, who scored in six games in a row for the Eagles in the 1960-1970 when their respective tournaments started.
Club América schooled the Amazonians 5-2, and they remain the only team unbeaten in the tournament.
