Sven Botman’s future at Newcastle United is facing uncertainty, with The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reporting that the centre-back is “desperate to play” and increasingly “frustrated” at his lack of playing
time.
In a mailbag response, Waugh highlighted the battle for the left-sided centre-back role, where Dan Burn has started every game this season. Burn’s form and leadership have cemented his place in the XI, leaving Botman on the outside looking in and limited to appearances in a back three, while unable to establish himself as a starter.
“When the Dutchman has started, it has been as part of a back three,” Waugh wrote. “Botman is desperate to play and is frustrated whenever he is not selected.”
The 25-year-old has struggled with knee issues over the past two years, and he also saw his pre-season interrupted by injury. While there is confidence within NUFC that he can rediscover his 2022–23 form, his reduced role is casting doubt over upcoming contract negotiations for a new deal.
Botman’s current contract runs until the summer of 2027, but by January he will be within 18 months of its final two years — a point at which Newcastle must decide whether to push for an extension or consider selling him instead of losing him for nothing.
Bayer Leverkusen registered interest in the defender late in the summer, though Newcastle refused to entertain offers for the center back. We’ll see what happens the next time they—or anyone else—comes calling.
