Triple-A: Durham Bulls (Rays) 17, Norfolk Tides 9
It was a rough night on the mound for the Norfolk pitching staff. They managed to allow more runs (17) than hits (13) because they also issued 10 walks and the defense made a pair of costly errors. Six different hurlers toed the rubber for Norfolk. Only one of them had a good outing. That was Yaramil Hiraldo, who struck out all three batters he faced. Cameron Foster is one of the pitchers that struggled. He gave up two hits, including a home run, but also struck out three in his lone inning. Corbin
Martin was handed the loss. He served up five runs and walked six in just two-thirds of an inning. Maybe the recently-DFA’d righty is tweaking some mechanics of something. Oof.
There was better news at the plate, where the Tides scored nine times on 12 hits, eight walks, and nine strikeouts. Tyler O’Neill was one of three Tides to homer. The other two were Gary Sánchez and Silas Ardoin. Enrique Bradfield Jr. went 1-for-5 with a strikeout. Terrin Vavra, Liván Soto, and Jordyn Adams drove in two runs each. In addition to his round-tripper, Ardoin also worked three walks.
Double-A: New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) 3, Chesapeake Baysox 2 – F/10
There wasn’t much action in this one. New Hampshire scored twice in the third inning. Chesapeake put two across in the seventh. And that was it until the home town Fisher Cats drove in the Manfred runner for a walk-off win in the 10th.
Trace Bright started for the Baysox. He went four innings, and allowed the two runs on three hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. The next four pitchers (Geraldo Ogando, Carter Baumler, Tyson Neighbors, and Micah Ashman) combined for four no-hit innings to give the lineup a chance to crawl back. Zane Barnhart came on for the ninth, and put up another zero to send the game to extras. But he fell victim to the extra-inning rules, eventually giving up a walk-off single with the bases loaded to end the game.
Chesapeake’s two runs should have been even more. They scored the first on a Brandon Butterworth double in the top of the seventh. And the second came in the very next at-bat, when Carter Young singled in Butterworth. But that’s all they would achieve in an inning that included three hits, two walks, and a wild pitch. In total, Chesapeake went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the game. Young and Ethan Anderson were the only two batters with multiple hits. Griff O’Ferrall added a double.
