The Husker women (18-12) learned their postseason fate today and they squeaked into the top 68. Nebraska will play the Richmond Spiders in an 11/11 play-in game. The winner of that contest will play the #6 seed Baylor Bears in the first round of the Regional 2-Sacramento. The Huskers head to Durham, NC and will play on Wednesday, March 18th with time TBD.
Nebraska started the season with a 13-0 run that put them into the rankings. They wobbled a bit
in Big Ten play, going 7-11, and earning the 12 seed in the conference tournament. They were a bubble team going into the Big Ten Tournament and many (this author included) felt like they needed a win or two to feel good about their chances for the NCAA tournament.
Well, Nebraska went one-and-done, losing to the #13 seed Indiana Hoosiers. Fortunately for the Huskers, there were not many bid-stealers among the mid-majors and single-bid conferences. Jaden and I will do some scouting and update you on Richmond in the next couple of days.
The Big Ten qualified 11 teams for the tournament with Nebraska being the 12th if they advance past Richmond. The strength of the Big Ten is probably a big part of how the Huskers made the tournament. Nebraska finished #28 in the NET rankings and the selection committee seems to put a lot of stock in that.
It’s fun having meaningful basketball for both the men’s and women’s teams in Nebraska isn’t it? What do you think of the seeding and the women’s tournament? Let us know in the comments!
