Brewers 7 Blue Jays 2
Well…..Shane Bieber looked excellent. He gave up a solo homer to start the sixth. Then a single and a fly out, and he was out of the game. In all 5.1 innings,, five hits, two earned (that single in the sixth came around to score, no walks and six strikeouts.
Unfortunately, the bullpen had a rough go, again.
- Brendan Little gave up a walk and, soft hit, single to score one. His night ended on a strikeout, the only out he got.
- Louis Varland followed, and it got worse: Single (bringing in one of Little’s runs), double (bringing home two, one on Little, one on Varland), before finally getting the last out of the inning. Suddenly it was 5-0.
- Jusin Bruihl gave up three hits and two earned (with two strikeouts) in the seventh.
- Tommy Nance made it through the eighth without allowing a run, just a walk with two strikeouts.
- Yariel Rodríguez didn’t give up a run, but walked two in the ninth.
The relievers are going to have to figure things out soon.
Freddy Peralta was terrific, just one hit and one walk allowed in six innings, with eight strikeouts.
We got a couple
of runs off Aaron Ashby in the seventh, but that was it for scoring.
In all we had four hits, two for Bo Bichette, one each for Alejandro Kirk and Davis Schneider.
The worst moment of the game. Daulton Varsho took a pitch off the hand. It looked like it hurt a look. No word yet on whether anything is broken.
Jay of the Day: Bieber (.111).
Other Award: Varland (-.167), Little (-.114),. No one on the offense got the number, Lukes had the low mark at -.088, for an 0 for 4, 1 k.
But the Jays are back at it tomorrow at 3:00 Eastern. Kevin Gausman (8-10, 3.87) vs. Quinn Priester (11-2, 3.44).
