Carolina baseball opens its Super Regional against USC today, and I want to know how important you think this series should be to the program’s future direction.
I recognize that this question may be puzzling on the surface, so let me break down my reasoning. The way I see it, the program is at a fork in the road, and the outcome of this Super Regional will illustrate either a pattern of success or a pattern of underachievement.
If the Tar Heels win, it will be their second trip to the College World
Series in the past three seasons. If the Tar Heels lose, it will be the third time in the past five seasons they’ve been eliminated in Super Regionals – all at home, and all by an unseeded opponent.
Billy Beane famously called the MLB postseason a crapshoot, and the same is true at the college level. Plenty of great teams fall short of expectations every May and June. That’s just the random nature of the sport. But when those letdowns start to become a regular occurrence, it might be time to make some changes, whether operational or organizational. I think we’ll have reached that point if Carolina fails to advance.
