Andreas Köpke was the goalkeepers coach for Germany’s 2014 World Cup winners. Some might think that was an easy gig in working with Manuel Neuer, but the Bayern Munich goalkeeper is said to be a big fan of his old coach. Köpke also played a key part in helping Neuer overcome a shoulder ailment to be ready in time for the World Cup.
Andreas Köpke’s role in 2014
As goalkeeper coach, Köpke worked extensively with Manuel Neuer and the two built a strong relationship. When Neuer was struggling with a shoulder issue before the 2014
World Cup, it was Köpke, who Neuer worked closely with and also Köpke, who advocated for the goalkeeper to stay in the lineup.
Köpke was heavily involved in the handling of the situation and Neuer allowed him significant input into managing his recovery. At the time, Köpke was described being in constant communication with Neuer about his condition before Germany’s opening match. Neuer had missed the tune-up matches prior to the friendlies.
What is Andreas Köpke doing now?
Since leaving the DFB, Köpke had a brief stint with Hertha Berlin during Jürgen Klinsmann’s tenure and later worked as goalkeeping coach for the South Korea until 2023. From there, Köpke has not taken another coaching position and is currently without a club.
However, Köpke does make some media appearances as a pundit, including earlier this year when he discussed Germany’s goalkeeper situation ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
