The Virginia Tech Hokies fell to 3-8 on the season Saturday, falling 34-17 to the Miami Hurricanes in the final home game of the 2025 season.
The No. 13 Hurricanes jumped on the Hokies early, as quarterback Carson Beck was perfect on the game’s opening drive to give Miami an early 7-0 lead. The Hokies responded with a field goal on their first drive, but the ‘Canes scored another touchdown on their second drive, with Beck completing his first 11 passes.
Miami would increase its lead to 20-3, which
is where things stood at halftime.
Tech would open the second half with the football, and we got to see an exciting part of the Hokies’ future. True freshman running back Jeffrey Overton Jr. took it to the house from 38 yards out to make it a 20-10 game. It was Overton’s first career touchdown, and he’d finish the game with 69 yards on seven carries.
Unfortunately, Virginia Tech’s defense couldn’t put up much resistance against Miami’s talented receivers. Beck threw to open receivers all day, completing 27 of 32 attempts for 320 yards and four touchdowns.
The Hurricanes immediately responded with another touchdown, and just like that, it was a 17-point game again. The Hokies made one more run at it in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback William “Pop” Watson relieved Kyron Drones and immediately completed two passes for 77 yards. Watson would then score on a short touchdown run to make it a 10-point game again.
Virginia Tech would immediately get the ball back with an onside kick, but turned it over on downs. Beck would throw his fourth and final touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining to push it back to 34-17.
The Hokies finished the game with a respectable 395 yards of total offense. They had 201 passing yards, but 77 of those yards came on two Watson completions in the fourth quarter. Drones passed for only 124 yards. He struggled again, throwing the ball, but in fairness to him, Virginia Tech’s offensive line struggled to deal with Miami’s fearsome defensive line. The Hokies had another excellent day running the ball, finishing with 194 yards on 37 attempts (5.2 yards per attempt) and two touchdowns.
Marcellous Hawkins led Tech with 72 yards on eight attempts, followed by Overton with 69 yards.
Drones was again screwed over by ACC officials when he completed a long ball at Ayden Greene that did not count due to an inadvertent whistle. We’ve asked it before, but is there any group of officials more incompetent than those who represent the ACC?
New head coach James Franklin was in attendance, briefly speaking to the crowd before the game, and watched the game from a suite. Franklin held a huge recruiting weekend, and Hokie fans should expect good news in the coming days.
It was another tough day in Lane Stadium, but brighter days are indeed ahead.
Tech heads north to Charlottesville next week in hopes of ruining UVA’s dream season.
